Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body that regulate all physical and emotional functions such as sleep, metabolism, growth, stress, and mood. When your hormones are balanced, they work in symphony, and you feel, look, and perform at your best. The main hormones that govern the female body include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormones. Our bodies require appropriate levels of hormones to function properly. Aging, our environment, diet, our genetics, and any number of conditions, can cause hormone imbalance.

Symptoms of hormone imbalance include:

  • Fatigue
  • Low libido
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Weight gain/inability to lose weight
  • Hot flashes/night sweats
  • Anxiety/irritability
  • Depression
  • Inability to concentrate “brain fog”
  • Decreased muscle mass/strength
  • Loss of confidence

Benefits of bio-identical hormone replacement far outweigh the risks. Many women are scared of hormone replacement due to erroneous knowledge floating around out there. Many of the studies, especially the ones highly publicized, manipulated the data to come up with the mantra “hormones cause breast cancer.” Many mores studies show that hormone replacement therapy, especially when started at the transition of menopause or shortly thereafter have far more health benefits than risks. In addition to alleviating symptoms listed below, other benefits are reduced cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and dementia.

  • Reduced incidence of hot flashes and vaginal dryness
  • Better maintenance of muscle mass and strength
  • Improved cholesterol levels, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Reduced risk of endometrial and breast cancer
  • Reduced risk of depression
  • Improved sleep
  • Better mood, concentration and memory
  • Improved libido
  • Reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease
  • Reduced risk of osteoporosis and improved bone density

Many patients opt for BHRT because it is not a one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare. Each bioidentical hormone prescription is custom-compounded, based on each patient’s individual diagnostic results, making bioidentical hormones safer and more effective in comparison to conventional (synthetic) hormones.

What about creams/gels and patches?

The best way to replace hormones is using bio-identical sterile pellets: Although not as commonly used as creams/patches/gels studies have shown as well as clinical practice that pellet based therapy is far superior in symptom relief than any other method. Creams are very difficult to monitor and absorption is so widely varied and unpredictable. Pellets allow for a physiologic replacement of deficient hormones.

What are sterile pellets?

Sterile pellets are a small and cylindrical dosage form, about the size of a grain of rice.

Sterile pellets are used to treat hormone deficiencies and imbalances by implanting them in the subcutaneous tissue of the hip/gluteal region.

They are placed beneath the skin during a simple office procedure. This method of hormone delivery allows the body to slowly draw out small, physiologic doses of the needed hormone, providing for a more consistent steady-state delivery. The sterile pellets typically dissolve over a period of three to four months, sometimes lasting up to six months, at which time, new pellets will need to be implanted.
